P. Vulgaris,

What Is Pemphigus Vulgaris?

Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) is a rare autoimmune blistering skin disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the proteins that hold skin cells together. This results in fragile blisters and painful erosions on the skin and mucous membranes, particularly inside the mouth.

It is not contagious and cannot be spread from person to person.

Common Symptoms

* Painful blisters on the skin
* Mouth ulcers or painful sores (often the first symptom)
* Blisters that rupture easily, leaving raw, eroded areas
* Crusting of skin lesions
* Pain while eating or swallowing if the mouth or throat is affected
* Hoarseness if the voice box is involved

Commonly Affected Areas

* Mouth
* Scalp
* Face
* Chest
* Back
* Groin
* Underarms
* Other mucous membranes, including the nose or genitals

Causes and Risk Factors

* Autoimmune disorder
* Genetic predisposition
* Certain medications (rarely)
* Usually develops in middle-aged or older adults

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on:

* Medical history
* Physical examination
* Skin or mucosal biopsy
* Direct immunofluorescence (DIF)
* Blood tests for pemphigus antibodies

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

Consult a dermatologist if:

* You develop persistent or painful mouth ulcers.
* You have blisters that rupture easily.
* Skin erosions do not heal.
* Eating or swallowing becomes painful.
* You develop widespread blisters or raw areas of skin.

Important Facts

* Pemphigus Vulgaris is not contagious.
* It is a chronic autoimmune disease that requires specialist evaluation.
* Mouth involvement often appears before skin blisters.
* Early diagnosis is important to prevent complications and improve long-term outcomes.
