What are Striae Atrophicans?
Striae atrophicans, commonly known as stretch marks (striae), are long, narrow streaks that develop when the skin stretches rapidly. They occur due to tearing of the skin’s supporting fibers (collagen and elastin) in the deeper layer of the skin. Stretch marks are very common and are not harmful or contagious.
In the early stage, stretch marks are usually red, pink, purple, or brown (striae rubrae). Over time, they gradually fade and become white or silvery (striae albae).
